AA - nothing to do with alcohol or cars—the Arboricultural Association
 
ISA -  International Society of Arboriculture

HSE - Health & Safety Executive— you’ll meet them if you get it wrong!

AFAG - Arboriculture & Forestry Advisory Group– safety guidance leaflets

CE - Conformité Européene; the European standards which ensure equipment sold is safe and fit for purpose

BS - British Standard; the UK’s authority on quality control standards for all safety critical equipment and guidance documents for best practice

WLL- Working Load Limit; the maximum working capacity of an item of equipment can safely carry or hold in the correct configuration

SWL - Safe Working Load; the older version of WLL—applied more often to engineering

 

 

MBS - Minimum Breaking Strength; the minimum applied force or load at which the item can be expected to fail

MBL - Minimum Breaking Load; the minimum applied load or weight which will cause the item to fail

SF - Safety Factor; 

  • PPE - Hardware 1:10, Textiles 1:14; 
  • Non PPE - Hardware 1:5, Textiles 1:7.
